Our Story
Named for a tributary of the Po River in Emilia-Romagna, Bar Enza is a neo-trattoria tucked inside The Charles Hotel in Harvard Square — where Italian culinary tradition meets one of America’s most storied college neighborhoods.
Opened in 2021 as a collaboration between The Charles Hotel and the Lyons Group, Bar Enza occupies a space with deep Italian roots — previously home to Jody Adams’s beloved Rialto for nearly two decades. The kitchen is now led by Culinary Director Lydia Shire, the first female James Beard Award winner, who brings more than 50 years of experience and her signature approach to bold, seasonal Italian cooking.
What you’ll find here is a menu built around fresh handmade pasta, locally sourced ingredients, and the flavors of regional Italy — complemented by a wine program with an Italian soul and a cocktail list rooted in the aperitivo tradition.
The Space
The dining room takes its palette from the Italian countryside — dusty rose, terracotta, sage green, and warm brass. The original wood floors were preserved. Marble-topped tables sit alongside cane-backed chairs and baby pink banquettes.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with natural light, softened by sheer curtains that shift with the day. The result is a room that feels collected over time rather than decorated all at once.
The Kitchen
Culinary Director Lydia Shire — the first female James Beard Award winner and a defining figure of Boston dining for over 50 years — leads our kitchen with a focus on bold, seasonal Italian cooking. Every pasta is made fresh daily. The antipasti reflect what’s best at the market that morning.
Under Lydia’s direction, the menu walks the line between classical Italian tradition and spontaneity — from lamb meatballs scented with coriander and cinnamon to grilled spatchcocked baby chicken with garlic butter fondue. Every dish is personal.
